Creative achievements of faculty and students
The faculty of the Symbat institute of design and technology активно represents the culture and artistic traditions of Kazakhstan at national and international creative platforms. The academic staff regularly participates in exhibitions, festivals, competitions, fashion shows, and international art projects in both near and far abroad, including Sweden, Russia, Italy, France, the UAE, China, the USA, Cyprus, and other countries.
Honored worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Candidate of Art Studies B.E. Assanova has been holding solo exhibitions abroad for more than 10 years, contributing to the promotion of Kazakh culture and national art. Associate Professor V.G. Grigoryan annually conducts ceramic master classes in Italy and participates in international exhibitions, including in Paris (Louvre). Honored worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kh.A. Kurbanov held a solo exhibition at the “Ridarin” gallery (Stockholm, Sweden).
Faculty members — B.E. Assanova, Kh.A. Kurbanov, B.E. Zaurbekova, V.G. Grigoryan, O.O. Zhubaniyazov, R.Sh. Makazhanov and others — are лауреаты international art exhibitions, winners of international haute couture competitions of national costume (Moscow), participants of Moscow Fashion Week, Dubai (UAE), Washington DC Fashion Week, and Kazakhstan Fashion Week (Almaty).
Faculty members actively participate in international symposiums and creative forums in Nicosia (Cyprus), Bursa (Turkey), Varna (Bulgaria), Rostov-on-Don and Saint Petersburg (Russia), and other cities. The Department of Design and Scenography regularly organizes art exhibitions, creative competitions, fashion shows, scenographic and design master classes. The international competition “Creative World” is systematically held under the theme “Inspiration without borders: fusion of national and modern style,” bringing together young designers from more than 14 countries. Jury members in different years have included renowned international designers and leaders of the fashion industry such as Vyacheslav Zaitsev (Russia), Stefano Secoli (President of Istituto Secoli, Italy), Sayit Yusuf (International Organization of Turkic Culture TURKSOY), Alex Chzhen (founder of the brand “Alex Chzhen,” stylist, art director of Kazakhstan Fashion Week), representatives of the Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Almaty, Kh.T. Nasyrova (President of the Association of Hairdressers of Kazakhstan, international judge), Aidarkhan Kaliev (ASPARA, Taraz), F. Baratova (Art Director of the Union of Hairdressers and Make-up Artists of Kazakhstan, international master, five-time world champion gold medalist), and many others.
Since February 2024, the Sabyrkul Assanova creative studio has been operating at the institute. The studio presents collections of Kazakh national costumes for different age groups (men’s, women’s, children’s) with decorative designs and a history of more than 70 years. It also features a traditional yurt interior, visual materials on Kazakh national ornaments and techniques, embroidery equipment, educational and methodological literature on studying and creating national costumes, decorative and applied art objects, as well as modern computer equipment with professional clothing design software. The studio enables students to visually study Kazakh national costume and create it in contemporary conditions.
Students of the Design specialization under the supervision of leading faculty members ежегодно become winners and prize-winners of numerous international and national competitions and festivals in design and fashion (Russia, Azerbaijan, Italy, and others). Scenography students regularly participate in Almaty Fashion Air as make-up artists and stylists.
Students are winners of the International young designers competition “Zhas-Orken,” the Republican young designers competition “Inzhu-Design” with an ethno-style collection, finalists of the National young designers competition Open Way – New Generation (2022–2024), participants of VIZA Fashion Week, winners of “JIDE modern & traditional,” and prize-winners of the international student plein-air competition “Kyzgaldak” (KazNAI named after T.K. Zhurgenov). They are also prize-winners of republican academic olympiads (KazGASA, ATU, KazNAI), and of the “Modern typographic culture” competition within the “Rukhani Zhangyru” program (KazNPU named after Abai).
Our students are also winners and prize-winners of the International festival of graduation works in architecture, construction, and design of Eurasian schools (Kazakhstan, Italy, Ukraine, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan), International design festivals “Tochka.RU – Siberia” (Kosygin Russian State University branch, Novosibirsk), “Fashion-Prospect” (Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Design), the International competition of inventive and creative student projects “ART Idea” (Khakass State University), and prize-winners of the First All-Russian festival with international participation “DonDesign Fest” held at the Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don).
The institute is an active creative platform that contributes to the development of modern design, scenography, and decorative and applied arts, as well as to the international recognition of the Kazakh artistic school.
