Scientific achievements of the Symbat institute of design and technology

The Symbat institute of design and technology is one of the leading educational and research centers in the fields of design, technology, and creative industries. The institute actively develops research activities aimed at integrating education, science, and innovation, contributing to the preparation of competitive specialists востребованных at national and international levels.

The scientific potential of the institute is ensured by a highly qualified faculty. Among them are doctors and candidates of sciences, professors and associate professors, academicians and corresponding members of the National engineering academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as holders of the honorary title “Honored worker of Kazakhstan.” Faculty members possess extensive academic and research experience and have made significant contributions to science and education.

The research results of the faculty are confirmed by a substantial intellectual property portfolio, including:

  • more than 20 industrial design patents for school uniforms;
  • 35 industrial design patents for various types of clothing;
  • over 40 inventions;
  • more than 40 copyright certificates.

The institute’s faculty has authored more than 50 national textbooks on national clothing, modeling, technology and garment design, painting and drawing, as well as a terminological dictionary for the light and textile industry (first edition – 5,000 terms; second edition – 12,000 terms). Faculty members also participated in the development of state educational standards in fashion design and production standards for various types of clothing.

The faculty conducted research within the framework of a state-funded contract with the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the program “National idea as the basis for the development of Kazakhstan.” Under a contract with the Ministry of defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 47 state standards for military uniforms were developed, including modern designs for military, general, and ceremonial uniforms. Projects were also implemented to create modern clothing and decorative elements for preschool and school children within the framework of Kazakhstan’s national idea.

Large-scale anthropometric studies of children of various age groups were conducted in Almaty, Astana, and the Almaty region. The results made it possible to optimize size and height data in children’s garment production, thereby improving quality and efficiency in the light industry. The implementation of innovative research methods has positively influenced technological development in the industry.

The institute previously operated a joint dissertation council for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations, within which 2 doctors of sciences and 19 candidates of sciences were prepared.

Since 2006, the institute has published the scientific journal “Design and technology industry,” serving as a platform for publishing research results in design, technology, and creative industries.

The institute’s research activities focus on the following priority areas:

  • Environmental design and visual communications
  • Fashion and textile technologies
  • Digital design and multimedia
  • Innovative materials and production technologies
  • Cultural heritage and contemporary design

Faculty members regularly publish their research results in national and international scientific journals, conference proceedings, and monographs. The number of publications indexed in authoritative databases increases annually, reflecting the steady growth of the institute’s scientific potential.

Faculty and students actively participate in international and national scientific conferences, symposiums, and forums. Special attention is given to student involvement in research activities. Students participate in research projects, competitions, and academic olympiads, presenting reports at student and youth conferences. The best works receive diplomas, grants, and publication recommendations.

Each year, students of the Symbat institute specializing in “Technology and construction of light industry products” participate in the Republican student subject olympiad held at Almaty technological university. Students demonstrate high levels of knowledge in “Materials science of light industry products,” “Garment production technology,” and “Garment construction,” presenting both research and applied projects. Their achievements are confirmed by diplomas and letters of appreciation from the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2022 – 3rd place; 2023 and 2024 – 2nd place).

Currently, the faculty is implementing initiative research projects registered with the National center for state scientific and technical expertise:

  • "Improvement of protective and ergonomic characteristics of clothing for kokpar based on the analysis of the interaction system 'player - clothing - game environment'' (2025-2028);
  • "Digital marketing as the main tool for business promotion" (2026-2029);
  • "Transformation of the Kazakh national costume in the context of modern cultural, technological, and digital development of Kazakhstan"
  • (2026-2029).

The Symbat institute of design and technology continues to expand its research activities, strengthen international cooperation, and actively implement digital and innovative technologies in science and education.
